The story of where this all began and why.
This documentary chronicles a once-thriving community now grappling with the unrelenting pressures of poverty and a fractured identity. Determined to reclaim their future, local leaders launched a bold initiative to elevate transformational leadership across seven sectors—Arts, Athletics, Business, Education, Government, Healthcare, and Nonprofit.
Using the 3D Coaching Framework, they embraced a “coach approach” to unite the community as one team with one mission: creating a better future for all. Together, they began to nurture growth, foster collaboration, and inspire leadership to spark lasting change.
Part I ended with the launch of this bold three-year journey. While Part II is yet to be produced, the essence of the story unfolds in the content below. As for Part III? The story of St. Joseph reclaiming its identity as “The City of Coaches” is yet to be written. Its future is in our hands.

The networking might be the most underrated part of The Joseph Company. Without The Joseph Company, there are people I might only see once or twice a year at a banquet or annual meeting or something. The fact that it is a regular occurrence does help with growing familiarity and establishing relationships with others in the community who care.
I think continuing to expand into actionable steps toward Imagine 2040 goals is the way to keep it going and growing. For a lot of people in that room, it's the only day of the month where 2040 is mentioned. The majority of St. Joseph residents still aren't aware it exists. Aside from CEOs and Executive Directors in Community Alliance, the average person doesn't get to make any decisions toward accomplishing those goals. Utilize the skills already in the room while you have their attention for that one hour a month, and really cultivate meaningful conversation with measurable results.

We’ve compiled every comment, course review, and other submitted data from the initiatives outlined on this page. Using ChatGPT, we generated summary reports for your convenience. Expand the accordion items below to see the AI prompts and the generated responses.
Perceived Community Culture
Chat GPT Prompt:
Write a one paragraph summary of these community leader responses to the following questions:
- What aspects of our community’s culture feel life-draining?
- What impact do these challenges have on individuals and the community as a whole?
- Whether perception or reality, how do these aspects influence how others perceive St. Joseph from the outside?
Chat GPT Reponse:
Community leaders identified several life-draining aspects of St. Joseph’s culture, including pervasive negativity, fear of change, and division between groups and areas within the city. Leadership often lacks action and vision, relying on control rather than inspiration, which fosters distrust and stagnation. These challenges have deeply impacted the community, leading to low morale, mental health struggles, addiction, and a toxic environment where positive voices are stifled. Economic growth is hindered by a negative reputation, which discourages businesses, families, and visitors from investing in or moving to the area. Externally, St. Joseph is perceived as stagnant, with declining infrastructure, underperforming schools, and a pervasive “stuck” mentality fueled by social media and vocal naysayers. This cycle of negativity undermines the community’s potential for unity, progress, and transformation.
Community Character Development
Chat GPT Prompt:
Write a one paragraph summary of these community leader responses to the following questions:
- Which character traits are most needed in our community to achieve a culture of excellence? Why?
- How can we, as leaders, intentionally cultivate both moral and performance character to strengthen our community?
Chat GPT Response:
Community leaders identified key character traits such as honesty, integrity, teamwork, love, and perseverance as essential for fostering a culture of excellence. They emphasized the importance of transparent leadership and psychological safety in workplaces and communities to combat apathy and instill pride of place. To cultivate both moral and performance character, leaders stressed the need to model these traits, hold themselves accountable, and foster growth opportunities for others. Initiatives should prioritize inclusivity, sustainability, and education about the “why” behind community efforts. Leaders must also communicate effectively, inspire action, and demonstrate commitment through consistent, positive examples.
Relevancy of the 3D Framework
Chat GPT Prompt:
Write a one paragraph summary of these community leader responses to the following questions:
- Do you believe the 3D leadership training aligns with the needs of our community? Why or why not?
- What specific ways do you think leadership development can help achieve the ideal culture you described?
- If this vision is worth pursuing, what role can you play in fostering this transformation?
Chat GPT Response:
Community leaders overwhelmingly agree that 3D leadership training aligns with the needs of their community, emphasizing its potential to empower leaders, inspire unity, and drive cultural change. They highlight the importance of starting small, creating tangible goals, and fostering buy-in across diverse sectors, including schools, businesses, and neighborhoods. Leadership development is seen as a vehicle for reframing negativity, cultivating accountability, and building a vibrant, collaborative community where all voices are valued. Many express a willingness to play active roles in fostering this transformation by promoting the vision, implementing strategies, and modeling 3D principles within their spheres of influence, recognizing the long-term commitment required to achieve meaningful change.

Although some noted areas for improvement, such as condensed modules and less redundancy, the overwhelming sentiment expressed appreciation for the course’s meaningful, purpose-driven framework, which has inspired participants to impact their schools, teams, and communities positively.
Chat GPT Prompt:
Write a one paragraph summary of the feedback from the SJSD focus group on 4/11/23.
The SJSD focus group, comprised of 30-40 educators reflecting on their experiences with the 3D Coaching Course, provided a mix of positive feedback and constructive suggestions for improvement. Participants praised the course for its manageable format, relevant content, emphasis on relationships, and its alignment with fundamental educational principles. However, they identified areas for enhancement, such as improving scheduling transparency, fostering collaborative reflection, integrating the program into district priorities and new teacher training, and providing more actionable strategies tied to real-world applications. Concerns about accountability, pacing, and alignment with district goals were also raised. Suggestions for future implementation included incorporating small group discussions, creating deadlines, offering the program for college credit, and ensuring leadership actively supports and communicates its purpose. Overall, while the content was valued, participants emphasized the need for clearer purpose, enhanced collaboration, and better integration into district structures.
