Leaders, our community needs YOU!
We are seeking “coaches” (our word for leaders) to unite around the shared purpose of making a positive difference in the culture of our community. If you are a leader in arts, athletics, business, education, healthcare, local government, or the non-profit sector, you’re invited to join us. If St. Joseph is to be marked by a culture where our kids and grandkids flourish, both now and in the future, the time to step up is now.
We need your help!
Why?
Our community has faced many challenges over the past several years. These struggles have contributed to a community culture that has had ill-effects on all of us. People are growing increasingly negative and cynical toward leadership. For many, levels of community pride are at an all-time low. Motivation and confidence levels are tanking, while feelings of distrust and division are on the rise.
Because of these reasons and more, people are leaving our community in search of greener pastures. While these issues are NOT unique to our community, our community IS doing something unique to change it… together. This initiative is to unite leaders from across the county who are interested in helping change the trajectory to a more positive direction.
How We Can Move Forward
As Greek lyrical poet Archilochus said, “We don’t rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training.”
For this reason, The Joseph Company has partnered with the 3D Institute to provide its 3D Coaching training framework, at NO FINANCIAL COST to participating individuals and/or organizations. Since 2014, the 3D Institute has worked with hundreds of organizations from over 60 countries. Born out of the world of athletics, 3D takes the best sport coaching practices and contextualizes them for leaders in any organization.
Along with thousands of testimonials to back it up, the 3D training has been proven by research to make a positive impact on people individually and on the entire culture of an organization as well.
The Game Plan
Here’s the simple 3-step plan:
Sign up to take the 3D Journey as a Team, or as an individual. If you still have questions before you sign up a Team, please check out the FAQ’s below or contact Alan Hoffler.
After you sign up, the next step is to identify how many Teams you want to participate from within your organization. A Team is small group of 3-12 people, plus a *3D Team Captain. We will then follow up to get the names/emails of your Team members so we can create their personal accounts and give them access to the online training.
If you want to participate but don’t have a Team to take the journey with, you are still welcome to sign up. We can work to place you with others in a similar situation, or you can go through the training on your own.
Between now and August 1st, 2023, 1,0000+ leaders from over 100 participating organizations in the community will execute the following simple strategy:
- Complete online training modules on their own personal accounts.
- If applicable, team members will then meet as a small group once per __________ to process the content they learned together.
*3D Team Captains help organize the group meeting times and facilitate the small-group discussions using resources provided by 3DI.
It’s Time to Act!
If not us, who? If not now, when?
Don’t overthink it. Sign up now and we will follow up to walk you through the rest of the process. We are keeping this intentionally simple so everyone can participate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the 3D Institute?
The 3D Institute was established in 2014 to come alongside sport administrators in a quest to help meet the growing professional development needs of the international coaching community. Historically, 3DI has trained sport leaders from over 60 countries to lead according to the 3D Framework. The 3D Framework empowers leaders to maximize the performance of their teams and leave a powerful legacy of impact in the lives of those they lead. Through this project, in partnership with The Joseph Company, 3DI is contextualizing the 3D Framework to be made applicable for the education industry and the business community as well.
What is the 3D Framework?
3D is a framework for coaching, built on a foundation of purpose. A coach’s/leader’s clearly defined PURPOSE acts as the foundation for the 3D Framework. Once the “why” is firmly established, the 3D Framework helps leaders be more intentional about meeting the developmental needs of others (employees, colleagues, students, teammates, kids, grandkids etc.) in all three dimensions:
The 1st Dimension: the skillset required to perform our various tasks with excellence
The 2nd Dimension: the mindset it takes to be a great teammate; both to ourselves and to each other
The 3rd Dimension: the character it takes to leave a legacy of positive impact in the lives of others and in the community
What is the 3D Journey?
The 3D Journey is how we describe the lifelong pursuit of mastery at coaching/leading in all three dimensions. It starts by learning to understand the 3D Framework itself. This is achieved by providing a baseline of training in the form of an online course called 3D Coaching for Business Leaders. We also have a version of this 3D training for athletic coaches and educators.
What is The Joseph Company?
The Joseph Company is the company of leaders from our community who are taking the 3D Journey together. To help fund this initiative, The Joseph Company is also a “Field of Interest Fund” set up at the Community Foundation of Northwest Missouri. This fund has been resourced by grant funding and generous community members who want to make this training available at no cost to any company/organization in Buchanan County, MO who desires to participate. Click here to learn more about the The Joseph Company’s origins.
How much does this cost?
Thanks to generous supporters from our community, there is no financial cost to participating individuals or organizations between now and 6/30/2024. The only cost we are asking is this: value this initiative enough that you give ample time, attention and thought to how this training should be implemented to impact your own life, your organization and the community at large.
I’m a Lone Ranger. Can I participate?
Of course. Sign up today and we’ll send you instructions for how to create your account. You can get started right away.
Can I start a group that isn’t tied to my workplace?
Yes. We will still consider you a “Team Captain,” even if you don’t do this with a “Team” at your place of employment. Your “Team” may be made up of friends, family, co-workers, church members, service groups, or just anyone else who you like to hang out with and discuss important things. All of the “Team Captain” questions that we answered below
What is a Team Captain?
A Team Captain is someone who commits to participating in the 3D Journey and facilitating a group (their Team) through the same online content. It is part cheerleader, part liaison, and part administrator. But a Team Captain is a participant just like everyone else.
What does a Team Captain DO?
First and foremost, participate in the 3D Journey. As we say, “You can’t be a tour guide to a place you’ve never been.”
For the regular Team meetings, the Team Captain will contact everyone to remind them of the meeting time and place, and be prepared to lead the discussion at the meeting using the Companion Guide (also free) provided by 3DI.
What skills does a Team Captain need?
At a bare minimum, a Team Captain really only needs to be literate. Organization and an ability to follow through are traits we would like as well, but there is no special talent needed. All of the materials are provided and you are simply tasked with reading the questions and brokering a discussion with your Team.
What content will I be teaching?
You won’t. Team Captains are not asked to teach anything. You merely facilitate the conversation.
What are the expectations of a Team Captain?
A Team Captain is expected to:
- Recruit the Team
- Complete the journey
- Follow-up with Team members
- Lead/facilitate the meeting (mostly just asking questions)
- Be vulnerable and seek to be a model
- Give feedback to 3D
What support will a Team Captain receive?
Team Captains will get training specific to leading the Team meetings, resources to help facilitate, and the opportunity to develop their own leadership. They will also will get a front-row seat to the impact and legacy that the 3D Journey can have in our community.
How often will the Team meet?
Usually, Teams meet monthly to discuss the content that was presented in the online course. However, the schedule and pace is entirely up to you and your Team.
What is a meeting like?
A Team meeting is really what the participants make of it. We envision a lot of discussion around open-ended questions that are based on the thoughts that each participant had while consuming the online content. If participants do not complete the Companion Guide exercises before the meeting, then the discussion will likely be less interesting and impactful. We expect a 3D Team Captain to address members of the Team who do not uphold their commitment.
How big is a Team?
Teams could be anywhere from 3-12 members, with our recommendation being 6-10.
Who else is doing this?
The St. Joseph School district is having all of their 1500+ employees go through the 3D training as contextualized for educators. All coaches in the SJSD and many independent coaches are doing the 3D training for sport leaders. The 3D Business version is designed for any organization, large or small, for-profit or non-profit.
Click here for a current list of participating organizations.
What is the training like?
The online program was designed so participants can complete 1 section per month. There are roughly two modules in each section. Each module is broken up into 6-7 units each. Each unit is 3-5 minutes in length. The total monthly video time is approximately 30 minutes.
Each month there will be a focus on a coherent theme that is an integral part of the 3D Journey.
As important as the online video training is, using the Companion Guide to journal your way through and the discussions in the Team meetings will greatly enhance the impact. We believe that sharing the journey is an important part of solidifying the concepts and gaining enough inertia to effect the change you would like to see.
Why does this work?
We are modeling this off of a concept called cohort-based learning. In cohort-based learning, individuals connect as a group to learn, collaborate, and actively engage in activities built around a specific subject. In doing so, this learning method creates a deeper understanding of shared goals and shows learners how to achieve goals — together — in the workplace.
What topics will this training cover?
The nine sections (designed to complete one per month) of the online training are titled:
- A Team and the Coach
- The 3D Framework
- The First Dimension: Fundamentals
- The Second Dimension: Inside the Head
- The Second Dimension: Working with Others
- The Third Dimension: Business Culture
- The Third Dimension: An Individual’s Place
- The Third Dimension: What you Leave Behind
- The Road Ahead
The content is all based on the 3D Framework which includes topics like motivation, confidence, emotions, team cohesion, goal setting, character, identity, significance, value, self-worth and purpose.
How much time does this take?
While the Journey is not particularly time-intensive, it does require intentional, uninterrupted reflective time to be effective. We estimate the videos will take about 30 minutes per month and the Team meeting will take about 60 minutes. Additionally, each participant will be encouraged to reflect and write their thoughts using the Companion Guide. Ideally, they will bring these thoughts to the Team meeting for discussion and application.
Can remote workers participate?
If someone is part of your organization but work from another community, they are welcome to participate by web meeting. We will set them up with online accounts like everyone else, and then they can participate in the Team Meeting by video conference. It will be up to you to provide that technology.
How do I handle someone who doesn’t want to participate?
Not everyone will see the need or value in taking the 3D Journey. We wish to affirm them in their personal decision. Some organizations will require participation, but we do not recommend a heavy-handed approach. A heavy-handed approach can undermine the purpose of this training.
Does my Team have to use the 3D Coaching for Business Leaders version of the training?
There are three versions of the 3D training: Sports, Education, and Business. While the language and examples used in each are different, the material and core truths are the same. If one of the other versions is better suited for you and your organization, by all means use that version. Just notify Wes Simmons and he will set you and your Team up with access.
What ongoing support will be provided?
On April 29th, 2021, we held a breakfast for Team Captains). There, we answered questions, explained the online registration process, went over supporting resources, did some initial training, and established a calendar for ongoing support. This was recorded, and can be provided to anyone who is wanting to lead a group on the 3D Journey if they desire to watch that content.
Also, 3D Team Captains, along with any other individual, will have direct access to 3DI staff to help with technical support. Representatives from The Joseph Company are available to help with other needs as well.
What’s my next step?
If you are ready to commit to taking your Team on the 3D Journey, make sure you have signed up. We’ll follow up to get the names and email addresses of your Team members. That’s it! We’ll be in touch.
